March 23rd - March 27th

What We Are Learning
Reading:  This week we dove deeper into character traits.  We read the book The Three Little Pigs and compared and contrasted the characters in the story. Ask your child about being observed by the other kindergarten teachers!
Alphabet: In alphabet this week, we looked at the _op word family (examples: hop, mop, top, etc.). We practiced “spelling” these words with our bodies.  We also learned about the blends gr and pl.
Writing:  This week we continued our opinion writing unit. This week we worked on starting our writing pieces with the following topic sentence: My favorite____ is ____. We also worked on using 3 details to support our opinion.
Math: We continued reviewing the teen numbers 16-19. We worked on breaking these numbers apart, representing them as an equation (example: 10+3=13), and making them using a tens frame.
Theme: During theme this week, we learned about spring.  We went on a nature walk to find evidence that spring has arrived. We also wrote a spring acrostic poem.

Wonder Table
Now that spring has finally arrived, I would love to update our wonder table.  Keep an eye out for spring time items that we can observe. Your child is invited to bring in budding flowers, interesting plants, and yes…even insects (no spiders please)! All I am asking is that you make sure all insects are in a secure container.  We will observe them and then release them outside.  Keep your eyes open for signs of spring!

Summer School
Summer school registration forms came home in your child’s take home folder this week.  These forms need to be returned no later than May1st.  I encourage everyone to attend summer school. Even if your child is doing well academically, summer break is very long.  Most students lose some of the progress they made during the school year.   Keep that in mind while making your summer plans.

What We Are Learning
Reading:  This week we reviewed what characters and settings are in a story.  Next week we will dive even deeper into this topic.  We will look closely at character traits.
Alphabet: In alphabet this week, we looked at the _ug word family (examples: bug, rug, mug, etc.). We practiced “spelling” these words with our bodies.  We also learned about the blends fr and gl.
Writing:  This week we started a new opinion writing unit.  We decided on an opinion and justified it using three reasons why.  Ask your child which special class they chose to write about.
Math: We started a new math unit. We reviewed the teen numbers 11-15. We worked on breaking these numbers apart, representing them as an equation (example: 10+3=13), and making them using a tens frame.
Theme: During theme this week, we learned about St. Patrick’s Day.  We pretended we met a leprechaun and he gave us 6 wishes.  We also wrote about who is worth more than gold. Ask your child who they chose to write about.

Tiger Pride Assembly
Our next Tiger Pride Assembly will be March   25th at 2:30. Parents are more than welcome to attend! You never know when your child might be recognized for good character, teamwork, academics, or improvement!

Spring Conferences
This year our school will be doing spring parent teacher conferences for the first time. They will be March 24th and March 26th.  These conferences will be different from fall conferences in that they are not student-led but more of a conversation focus and a chance to look at data about your child’s growth this year.

Reading:  This week we learned about the sneaky silent e.  We practiced flipping the vowel sounds and decoding words when they have a silent e at the end.

Alphabet: In alphabet this week, we looked at the _it word family (examples: bit, kit, sit, etc.). We practiced “spelling” these words with our bodies.  We also learned about the blends dr and fl.

Writing:  This week we finished writing nonfiction/fact books. Your child drafted, revised, edited, and published a book all on their own.  I will score this independent writing piece using the district writing rubric.  Your child’s score will be reflected on his/her grade card.

Math: We finished our addition and subtraction unit.  I spent the week assessing individual students on adding and subtracting within 10 and addition and subtraction word problems.

Theme: During theme this week, we celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday! We read The Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham.  Ask your child if they would want the Cat in the Hat to visit their house!

I sent home information last Friday.

 Dry Erase Markers
Can you believe that I am asking for dray erase makers again?! Well…we are in need again!  We use these markers every day in our classroom.  If you can, we would love to have some donated. Thank you all for your generosity!
